What we do

The Need

Studies show that being read to as a child and having books in the home are the two most important predictors of future academic success. Yet two-thirds of low-income families do not own a single children’s book.

So we began installing Little Free Libraries…

Since 2013 children throughout Cleveland neighborhoods have enjoyed taking books from 60 Little Free Libraries we installed and support. The books fly out! But our children needed an endless supply of books.

Then we struck gold!

In November 2015, we developed a unique partnership with online bookseller Discover Books to bring hundreds of thousands of free children’s books to Cleveland – books that would have been sent to recycling…

On February 1, 2016 we opened the Kids’ Book Bank in Midtown.

In our first 17 months, we’ve distributed 864,775 amazing children's books through more than 600 partner organizations – and of course, our Little Free Libraries.

For example:

  • 4,000 new mothers are receiving early childhood books every month for 2-4 years from agency workers that work with them on reading with their children.
  • 350+ home daycare providers are receiving 10 books quarterly and being trained to read with children by Starting Point.
  • Children of all ages and their parents are receiving hundreds of thousands of our books
  • from their pediatricians
  • from their schools and tutors
  • from churches, libraries and food pantries
  • from recreation centers and overnight camps
  • Teens from Boys and Girls Club and urban high schools come sort and box books and then excitedly select books for themselves, their families and their clubs.

And this is just the beginning...

Thanks to the hundreds of volunteers

who have helped sort books for our distribution partners!
